A young post graduate trainee was brutally raped and murdered in the early hours of 9th August, 2024, in RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata. She was on duty and the incident happened in the seminar room of the very department where she was posted. The students, resident doctors have been on strike ever since at RG Kar and other medical colleges of West Bengal demanding justice to the girl and security for doctors/staff on duty.

In a press release, IMA Bongaigaon says, “We are deeply anguished and devastated at the incident and more so the recent attack on the protesting doctors at RG Kar med college, and the way the case was handled delaying justice. The protest has now reached every section of the society and every right thinking individual has shown solidarity for the same.”
The press release also states, “In keeping with Letter No. IMA/HSG/Press/08-02/2024 from IMA HQ, and letter No. IMA/ASB/Protest/JFD/2024/206 from IMA ASB, IMA Bongaigaon appeals to all doctors, nurses, paramedics, and the greater civil society to stand in solidarity for this cause. In this regard, the following plan of action has been planned.”
1) Candle Light Vigil on 16/08/2024, Friday, at Walking Zone, Bongaigaon (near Bongaigaon College) from 6.30 pm
2) Solidarity March on 17/08/2024, Saturday, from Lower Assam Hospital to Theme Park/Clock Tower, at 6 pm.
3) Withdrawal of all non-emergency medical services including OPD, laboratory etc from 6 am of 17/08/2024 to 6 am of 18/08/2024, across all hospitals, private, corporate and government. Emergency medical services have been exempted from the strike.
